Gene R. Smillie teaches a wide variety of courses, mostly in Bible, in the REACH program. He sometimes teaches other REACH courses, like Religions of Asia, Church History, and Biblical Interpretation. He has taught at Elmhurst College, North Park University, and presently teaches at the University of Phoenix in many of its Chicago-land campuses.
Gene and his wife of 30 years, Susan, spent 15 years serving three terms overseas with the Christian and Missionary Alliance. He has lived on four continents—South America, Africa, Europe, and N.A., learning at least one language and culture of each of those well enough to teach and preach in that other language. So you might say he is “interested in people”!
His Ph.D. was done here at Trinity, under the aegis of Doug Moo and D. A. Carson. Before that he earned an M.Div. at Princeton, and an M.A. at Wheaton Grad School. Most of Gene’s college and graduate education was after he was already “mature”, so he relates quite naturally to REACH students who are juggling work, family, and studies.
